And conversely, if one boards the right train, it is not very useful to walk forward towards the engine. Maybe it is better to pick the correct train, and then sit back and enjoy the ride.
As I have been pondering your question, I was thinking that a person faces a similar situation if they pick a major in college. If they don't choose the best option, they may spend quite a bit of time trying to make the original choice work (kind of like walking backwards on the train) when it might have been better to change majors (trains). Unfortunately, one does not know that they are on the wrong train until they reach the back of the train and have no other options.
That is a good application to illustration. For me, it underscores the importance of making sure that your board the correct train. Personally, making sure that my ministry and life connected to the southside stays on a single minded focus of following Christ as it applies to my calling.
For Bonhoeffer, it was developing and leading the Confessing Church during the severe persecution and destruction by the Nazi regime. The wrong train would have been siding with the state (Reich) church, with the intent to reform it from the inside. The recently published Biography of Bonhoeffer by Metaxas was inspiring and challenging and is where I got the quote from.
